The Engineering Challenge

Cathodic protection is normally applied in combination with a protective coating rather than in place of one. The two systems interact, and the design, survey and maintenance of the protection scheme must account for that interaction across the operating life of the structure.

Why It Matters

Where a structure is partially or wholly immersed, buried or otherwise exposed to an electrolyte, coatings alone may not provide the required protection. Cathodic protection addresses that exposure, but only where the system is designed and maintained around the actual conditions of service.
